Using Pirate Ship with eBay isn't a hack — it's an official integration eBay supports. Orders sync automatically, tracking numbers upload automatically, and the setup takes about 3 minutes. Here's the exact workflow.
Is it against eBay's rules to buy labels off-platform?
No. eBay explicitly allows sellers to purchase shipping labels from any source. The rules that matter: upload the tracking number within eBay's required window and use a service the buyer actually receives on time. Both are trivial with Pirate Ship because it uploads tracking to eBay automatically.
The 6-step setup
Step 1: Create a free Pirate Ship account
Go to pirateship.com, click Sign Up, enter an email. No credit card. No plan selection — Pirate Ship has one product: free labels at commercial rates.
Step 2: Add a payment method
You'll pay for labels themselves (the postage). Add a credit card or link a PayPal account. Pirate Ship charges nothing on top — you pay the exact carrier rate.
Step 3: Connect eBay
In Pirate Ship, click Connect a Store, choose eBay, and authorize. You'll be redirected to eBay to grant permission, then bounced back to Pirate Ship. That's it — orders start syncing within a few minutes.
Step 4: Set your default package presets
Pirate Ship lets you save "package profiles" so you don't re-enter dimensions on every shipment. If you ship the same size poly mailer or box repeatedly, create a profile named "Small Poly" or "Medium Box" with those exact dimensions. On future orders, one dropdown pick and you're done.
Step 5: Turn on auto-tracking upload
In Settings → eBay, verify "Automatically upload tracking to eBay when I ship" is enabled. It's on by default, but confirm. This is the feature that makes the whole integration seamless.
Step 6: Print a test label
Go to your Ship page, pick a real order (or ship a test package to yourself), choose service, enter weight, click Buy Label. Pirate Ship generates a PDF or thermal label immediately.
The 3 default settings you should change immediately
1. Default carrier: leave as "auto-compare"
By default, Pirate Ship shows you all available USPS and UPS options ranked by price. Don't change this to auto-select — you want to see the trade-offs on each order. Sometimes UPS Ground is $0.75 cheaper than USPS Ground Advantage on a 5 lb package but takes an extra day; the choice depends on the buyer's expectations.
2. Turn on Cubic pricing rate-shopping
For Ground Advantage, Pirate Ship can automatically rate-shop between weight-based and Cubic pricing — whichever is cheaper for that specific package. Verify this is enabled in Settings. Cubic can save $2–$4 on small, dense items.
3. Set your default label format
PDF works with any printer but wastes paper (one label per sheet). If you have a thermal printer, switch to 4×6 thermal format. Setting → Label Format → 4×6.
How to handle shipping refunds when Pirate Ship charges less
Common scenario: buyer paid $10 in shipping via eBay calculated shipping. You buy a Pirate Ship label for $7. eBay doesn't take a cut of that $3 overage — it's yours to keep or refund.
What happens when you use combined shipping
eBay's built-in combined shipping applies when a buyer wins multiple items and requests an invoice. Pirate Ship doesn't natively combine orders — you'd manually create one shipment for the combined package. Workaround: when you see the combined-invoice request in eBay, calculate the combined package weight yourself and enter it as a single Pirate Ship shipment. Upload tracking to just one of the eBay orders and add a note in the other.
Does Pirate Ship work with eBay's international shipping programs?
Yes and no. eBay's International Shipping (formerly Global Shipping Program / GSP) intercepts your package at a US warehouse and handles international leg itself. If a buyer chose eIS at checkout, you ship to the US warehouse — Pirate Ship can print that domestic label just fine.
If a buyer chose direct international shipping (you ship to their country directly), Pirate Ship's Simple Export Rate is dramatically cheaper than eBay's international labels — routinely $4–$11 per package.
Common troubleshooting
Orders aren't syncing
Check that your eBay integration is still authorized (Pirate Ship → Settings → Stores). Authorization tokens occasionally expire; a re-authorize takes 30 seconds.
Tracking isn't uploading to eBay
Verify auto-upload is enabled (Settings → eBay). Also confirm the order in Pirate Ship has the eBay order ID attached — sometimes manually-entered shipments don't link back.
Rate looks wrong compared to eBay's calculator
Check the dimensions and destination type. UPS charges more for residential deliveries; USPS doesn't. Make sure you entered outer package dimensions (not inner), and confirm the destination isn't a rural ZIP that triggers the 15.99 oz rate (a July 2026 USPS rule).
MUNBYN 130B Bluetooth Thermal Label Printer
Wireless 4×6 thermal label printer — no computer connection needed. Prints from Pirate Ship on your phone via Bluetooth. Ideal for reseller setups where you list and ship from a mobile-first workflow.

Once set up, the actual shipping process becomes: sell item on eBay → Pirate Ship auto-imports the order within minutes → weigh package on a scale, enter weight → pick service, click Buy → print label → drop off or schedule USPS free pickup → tracking uploads to eBay automatically → done.
The whole process — from clicking the order to printing the label — takes about 40 seconds once you've done it 10 times.
